When the cold weather strikes, our skin feels the brunt of it. The dry, harsh air can cause it to become patchy, itchy, tight, red, and just downright uncomfortable. But that's nothing a bit of body oil can't fix.
"Body oils are excellent at hydrating the skin, as they act to lock in moisture and prevent water loss," explains Dr. Lauren Penzi, board-certified dermatologist based on Long Island. "They [work] to improve skin texture, helping to cut down on dry/rough/scaly skin, and instead make it smoother and softer." Not only that, the nourishing elixirs "make skin have a healthy, glowing appearance," says Dr. Brendan Camp, a double board-certified dermatologist based in NYC, adding that the "nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants in body oils also fortify the skin."
While these skin-loving moisturizers were once synonymous with the greasy, sticky, messy aftermath left behind on our bodies, today's formulas are nothing like the ones of yore. They're ultra-lightweight, fast-absorbing, glow-inducing, heavenly scented, and luxe as can be. Ahead, Dr. Penzi and Dr. Camp, as well as NYC board-certified dermatologist Dr. Blair Murphy-Rose, break down the best body oils to incorporate into your skincare routine this winter, plus everything you need to know about them.

Which body oil is best?
According to all three dermatologists, there are a number of naturals oils that are great for the skin. These oils can include, but are not limited to:
- Jojoba Oil
- Rose Hip Oil
- Argan Oil
- Grapeseed Oil
- Avocado Oil
- Olive Oil
- Coconut Oil
- Hemp Seed Oil
Editor's note: While oils can do wonders for dry skin, certain ones are more comedogenic than others. According to Dr. Camp, coconut oil is cited as having comedogenic properties, while Dr. Murphy-Rose says rose hip and hemp seed oils are less comedogenic.

Do you put oil or lotion first?
"The best time to apply body oil is after a shower when skin is still damp, which will allow the oil to seal moisture into the skin," says Dr. Camp. If using in tandem with a lotion or moisturizer, Dr. Camp and Dr. Penzi recommend applying the oil as a last step to lock in hydration.
For those with very dry skin, Dr. Murphy-Rose advises applying a rich body cream after the oil "for a luxurious skin-hugging coat" or mixing a few drops of oil into your favorite moisturizer.
